Gerben Gysels’ work plays with oppositions; public and private space, good and bad taste, local and global, black and white, yin and yang, salt and pepper, pigeons and cobblestones,… He assembles found images and objects, blurring the lines between photo, video, sculpture and furniture. This results in a repetitive, clear, ironic visual language, somewhere between pop and kitsch. His installations function as a never-ending associative ‘gag-machine’, playing an optical game with the spectator.
