The work of Fen De Winter is marked by a search for identity – a path he traces by exploring extremes in order to define the middle ground. His work flirts with nihilism, where meaninglessness highlights both the heaviness and the lightness of life: when nothing matters, everything becomes a game.
In Until the Bitter End, the tension between festivity and transience is explored. The titular piece evokes a mood of decadence and decay, where traces of intoxication blend with symbols of mortality. The garlands hint at celebration, yet their worn-out condition suggests the aftermath. Through these contrasts, De Winter seeks to reflect on how we celebrate, numb ourselves, and – in this endless quest – lose ourselves.
This exhibition is both an ode to the excesses of life and a confrontation with the price we pay for them.
