Where time ceases to exist and space gains a new dimension, Corry Vandermassen and Felicitas Rohden encountered each other in the endless desert plains of Jordan.
The artists disregarded the call of the paved road and embraced the warm sandy expanse with its elongated shadows, which found a place in their inner landscapes.
From this periphery, new work emerged for both artists, thematically connected.
Corry Vandermassen translated this experience into a series of 49 black cloaks, symbolically referring to bardo, the state of existence between death and rebirth — also a metaphor for a process of transition and renewal. Her matchstick works represent the transformative and alchemical aspect of this state.
Felicitas Rohden’s sculptural wall works, Motion of Knots, explore braided structures and mathematical knots with unique properties in abstract space. The knots — partly hollow and inflated — cast shadows that point to the ephemeral nature of their existence.
From the echo of the desert experience, both artists created a body of work now being presented together for the first time.
