Façade
Noor De Dapper, Ellen Vandeputte
‘Façade’ brings together recent work by Ellen Vandeputte and Noor De Dapper. Two worlds, emerging from a shared studio and a shared love of painting. Their images touch without merging. Together, they create a colourful, seductive space. Familiar images come together and take on new meanings. Beneath the surface, something elusive remains hidden.
In Ellen Vandeputte’s work, colour is what first draws you in. Her oil paintings burst with pink, purple and blue: seductive, bright and almost playful. But nothing is quite what it seems at first glance.
In her collage-like scenes, Ellen brings together animals, tables, plants and objects. Fish and snails appear appetising and decorative, until the boundary between appealing and repulsive begins to blur. A cute cat plays with birds’ heads, hunting dogs appear among poisonous plants. Weapons, axes and bombs also make an appearance. Beneath the colourful, beautiful surface lies a world full of tension and threat.
In her new series, Noor De Dapper brings together a collection of exotic plants. Small flowers, carefully displayed within frames and on paper. Captured in their beauty, neatly collected and observed. But they are not allowed to grow. Not to grow bigger, not to spread, not to step outside the lines.
The series emerges from this tension. Flowers that do not belong somewhere. That grow too vigorously, become too large, overrun others and are therefore uprooted. Beautiful, colourful and unruly.
In the large paintings on linen, the scale shifts. They grow beyond the frame and seem to want to redefine it. The flower becomes more than a botanical image. It takes on something human: the desire to occupy space, push boundaries and be allowed to exist somewhere.
Together, Ellen and Noor invite us to look beyond the pretty picture. Not to take away its beauty, but to see what stirs beneath it. Behind the façade. Something that grows, spreads, breaks free and changes shape — at once seductive and unsettling.
