Toon Jans’ artistic practice revolves primarily around nature, humanity and the relationship between the two. Nature conservation and ecology are recurring themes in his work. As a diver, he has a particular interest in water and the underwater world, which serve as important sources of inspiration for his practice.
Many of his images originate from a photographic archive. Using an analogue underwater camera, Toon Jans documents landscapes and the impact of human activity on those landscapes. These images are often developed into large-scale prints, which are subsequently reworked using graphic techniques, drawing or painting. The choice of materials and the role of texture are essential to this process. By combining different techniques and materials, he explores the tension between humans and their environment. Alongside his photographic work, he also experiments with sculpture, an aspect of his practice that is still in its early stages.
The Chit Chat will focus on two ongoing series. The first explores the relationship between seagrass and sea urchins. Combining photographic images with monotypes and cyanotypes, the series is nearing completion.
The second series focuses on coral and coral reef restoration. Still very much in development, it brings together a range of techniques, including plaster sculpture, photography and drypoint. By combining these diverse media, Toon Jans explores how the complex relationship between nature, human impact and restoration can be approached through visual art.
