EGGS* QUEENS* REALNESS*
Shif — t* presents EGGS, QUEENS, AND REALNESS: a series of printed aprons carrying fragments of queer history and coded language. Worn by café staff and volunteers, these aprons move through the space as they work. They invite questions, misreadings, explanations, and silences. In a time when queer language still needs to hide, shift, or circulate carefully, the aprons make visible how codes travel — and why they have to. The aprons are not identity badges.
They do not ask wearers to represent queerness or claim its history. Instead, they func- tion as carriers. Whoever wears them temporarily holds a piece of shared language, passing it on through use, conversation, and contact. Thinking of history as something carried rather than claimed, the work resonates with ideas from Ursula K. Le Guin’s “The Carrier Bag Theory of Fiction” and Chloe O. Davis’s “The Queens’ English.”
